Structured Data for Vacation Rentals: What Google Understands and What It Doesn’t
An accommodation website must be understandable by both a person and a search engine without inventing availability, prices, or reviews. Structured markup helps describe information, but it does not replace a complete listing nor guarantee appearing in Google Travel or AI responses.
VacationRental to any page does not guarantee rich results.What is structured data?
It is a machine-readable description of entities, relationships, and properties. Schema.org defines the vocabulary; Google decides which types and properties it accepts in its results. A syntactically valid schema does not imply that Google will use it.
What type corresponds to each page?
| Page | Reasonable Markup | Essential Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Article or comparison | Article or BlogPosting | Author, title, date, and content must be consistent with what is visible. |
| Company | Organization | Name, URL, and contact details must be truthful. |
| Navigation paths | BreadcrumbList | The breadcrumbs must correspond to the actual navigation. |
| Property listing | VacationRental when applicable | Verify technical requirements and participation; do not promise automatic inclusion. |
| Frequently asked questions | Visible FAQ content | Google restricts FAQ result eligibility to recognized government or health sites; do not sell it as a universal trick. |
Conceptual example of JSON-LD for a listing
This example shows the minimum identification data structure; it is not a ready model to achieve the enriched result VacationRental and should not be copied without adapting to official requirements.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "VacationRental",
"name": "Real name of the accommodation",
"url": "https://example.com/accommodation/",
"description": "Verifiable description of the accommodation",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"addressCountry": "ES",
"addressLocality": "Real municipality"
}
}
The fields in the example are illustrative markers, not a real property. Consult the official VacationRental documentation for required properties and access conditions. Only real and permitted data for the property should be included.
When does it make sense to structure prices and availability?
Only when there is a reliable source that can keep them updated and the specifications of the program or data consumer are met. A static price, "from €99" without dates or conditions, does not equate to a bookable offer in real-time. Avoid marking a property as available when you have not yet confirmed its availability.
What about AI assistants?
Google documents that its AI functions in Search do not require special files or new markup; they continue to rely on their indexing and quality foundations. Other platforms may use different methodologies. No official source allows claiming that installing a JSON-LD places a property in the response of all assistants.
What you can control is that each listing has a name, a stable URL, location, features, rules, photographs, booking conditions, and verifiable data. Schemas are a layer of clarification, not a substitute for content.
Errors that harm credibility
- Inventing ratings or adding
AggregateRatingwithout real and eligible reviews. - Marking rooms as a complete property.
- Repeating fictitious prices across all accommodations.
- Confusing public address and data that should remain private.
- Declaring availability that the engine has not yet verified.
- Placing the schema of a property in an article that does not offer that property.
- Creating pages in different languages without translated content and coherent links.
How to check it before publishing
Test the JSON-LD in Rich Results Test when applicable and in the Schema.org validator for its structure. Then review the HTML served in production: the validator does not test the truthfulness of an address or commercial availability.
